Jock drawer pull close-up; design by Neal Ulrich 2015

Jock

2015 | Aluminum

Starting with power tools and performance grips as archetypes of masculine design, Jock queers their functional aesthetic in the low-performance context of a drawer. Jock presents a self-conscious, cosmeticized masculinity in between stereotypes of masculine and feminine design language; glamour-butch drag in product form.

Jock was CNC machined out of solid aluminum. With two part flips and extremely small tooling, I was able to achieve virtually flat-bottomed grooves along the entirety of the not-quite-rubberized grip.
